How to check if your swipe card or fob is broken

Most swipe cards or keytag/fobs are built to withstand regular use, but over time they may stop functioning due to wear and tear, environmental exposure causing internal faults. CXI uses robust hardware that is tested for durability, but if your cards or fobs aren’t working, here are the most common causes and how to resolve them before talking to your Strata Manager (because they’re already busy so let’s help them out and try these options first) 🙂 :

🔉 1. Does the card reader beep once?

If the card reader can read the card it will - at minimum - beep ONCE to advise it reads the card. If this happens then move onto the next step.

If no beeps then and the card reader is silent the card is most likely damaged and unreadable. This will need to be replaced.

🔊 2. What do the beeps mean

If the card is being read by the reader then the type of beep will give us more information:

  • ONE SHORT BEEP - The card is readable by the card reader but the data isn’t being understood by the system, this will require a technician to problem solve further but your card is working!

  • TWO SHORT BEEPS - This signals that the card has been read and user has access to the door. If the door isn’t opening then there is another issue with the door and a technician will be required to troubleshoot the problem further. But your card is working!

  • ONE LONG BEEP or FIVE SHORT BEEPS - This indicates that the card has been read by the system and the user has no access to that door. This is a programming issue and you will need to contact your Strata/Building manager to get them or a technician to program this. But your card is working!

🔇 3. No beeping

Your card is damaged and can’t be read by the reader, you will need to seek a replacement from your building management team.
